Puffer, Bomber or Winter Coat: A Plain Guide to Jacket Styles
What each jacket style is actually built for, where it fails, and how to choose based on the weather you actually get.
Jacket names describe construction, not warmth. Two jackets called "winter jackets" can be twenty degrees apart in what they can handle. Here is what each shape is genuinely built for.
Puffer
A shell quilted into channels and filled with down or synthetic insulation. The channels exist to stop the fill migrating to the hem. Warmth comes from trapped air, which is why a puffer feels light for how warm it is.
- Best for: genuine cold, dry conditions, and packability.
- Watch for: wet weather flattens down insulation and it loses most of its warmth until dry. Synthetic fill handles damp far better.
- Fit note: buy with room for a mid-layer. A puffer compressed tight against your body cannot trap air, which is the entire mechanism.
Bomber
Cropped at the waist with a ribbed hem, ribbed cuffs and usually a ribbed collar. Originally flight clothing; now mostly a silhouette choice.
- Best for: transitional weather and layering over a hoodie without adding bulk to the legs.
- Watch for: the short body means your lower back is exposed when you sit or bend. It is not a cold-weather jacket on its own.
- Fit note: the ribbed hem should sit at your natural waist. Lower than that and the proportion collapses.
Winter coat
Longer than a bomber, typically hip length or below, with heavier insulation and often a hood. The extra length covers the hips and lower back, which is where most heat is actually lost while walking.
- Best for: sustained cold and standing around outdoors.
- Watch for: length restricts movement on a bike or in a car seat. Check the vents.
The two features worth checking before anything else
- The zip. A jacket lives and dies by its zip. Run it up and down fully on arrival. Metal teeth on a heavy jacket, a garage at the bottom that actually catches, and a puller you can operate with cold hands.
- The cuffs. Open cuffs pump warm air out with every arm swing. Ribbed or elasticated cuffs are worth more in real warmth than a slightly higher fill weight.
